SALT Manual

Strengthen, Appreciate, Learn, Transform

We have developed a training guide, downloadable here at no cost, that helps local people understand their local strengths, appreciate what they have, learn how they can put these strengths to use, and teach themselves and others what they learn. It helps people move from a “it’s not my problem, I can’t solve that” mindset to taking personal responsibility for the challenges in their community.

We used the guide to train local leaders in community health clinics, but it can be adapted to other community settings where the goal is to build local leadership to transform challenges in the community. SALT is a platform to bring the “voice of the people” into the decision making structures.

This guide provides resources for mentors/facilitators to coach local leaders and help them develop their own accountability plans and processes for making change. As such, the curriculum is much more process focused than content focused.

The training begins by building group cohesion and ends with the group implementing a community based program using resources identified as already existing in their communities. In the process the facilitators can coach them in using and testing tools for tracking progress in growing community engagement. In process, this helps local leaders working in their communities develop trust and confidence as they make community change.
